While I didn’t grow up on a farm like my FruitFast partner Bob Underwood, my family has been making and selling cherry products from our Brownwood Acres location on Torch Lake since 1945. Having summered at Torch Lake since birth, I made this area my permanent home following college.
That makes me fourth generation. I can’t help but reflect on my history in the business and the grandparents who taught me how to make all our products—from jams and jellies, to sauces, mustard and our World Famous Cherry Butter.
As you might expect, we’re all about family. My wife Dana and I have five active boys, so you can find us at soccer fields and hockey rinks when not at home. Combine that with a host of the kids’ friends who like to hang out, and you have a house that goes through a couple dozen bags of groceries a week. We have a built-in consumer test lab and I always leave a box of the latest version of our FruitFast fruit supplement bars on the counter. The Mixed Berry Bar with Dark Chocolate currently holds top honors.
Making Inc. Magazine’s list of the 500 fastest growing privately held companies in America for two straight years was vindication of my strategy to move the company from the condiment side of fruit into the value added and nutraceutical sector, for which fruit was beginning to be recognized.
We are in the process of building a new fulfillment center at Brownwood Acres to keep up with the growing demand for our FruitFast line. We’ve added several new products, including Fruit Bars, Liquids and a SkinCare line. Look for more launches in the months ahead.
We enjoy hearing from you, so please drop us a note. Your opinions are not only important, they drive our decision making process. If you’re not satisfied, we’re not satisfied.
In the meantime, take care and remember, a healthy body is a happy body!
